Hospitalization: When Your Bird is Ill

Having a bird that is not feeling well can be a frightening and stressful experience for just about anyone.  We pledge to offer your bird the highest quality care available and keep you up-to-date on your bird's progress.  If it is safely possible to do so, you are welcome to visit with your bird while they are hospitalized. 

The clinic has over 15 AICU incubators (Animal Intensive Care Units) in two different wards to meet the specialized care requirements that avian patients need (like extra heat, humidity and security).   We do our best to make every hospital patient as comfortable as possible, providing pain relief when advisable.  These AICU units allow us to closely control and monitor the temperature and humidity inside the unit.  We also have oxygen ready to supply to birds in respiratory distress. 

If your bird needs to be hospitalized, they will be housed securely in an appropriate sized AICU incubator and monitored closely by experienced staff, under the supervision of our veterinarians.  

Whatever treatments your bird may need are available including: oxygen, injections,  oral medications, gavage, intravenous fluids, subcutaneous fluids, hand feeding, ophthalmic treatment, medication administered via drinking water, specialized diets, social eating or topical treatments (just to name a few).

You will receive regular updates from our experienced Avian Care Technicians, in addition to one-on-one phone consults with Dr. Lintner, or in-person, while your bird is in the hospital with us.  You are also welcome to call as often as you like to get the latest information!  We are happy to talk to you about your bird's progress and to answer any questions you may have.
